A group of misfits, each burdened by deep personal regret, descends into the Gungeon, a sprawling, ever-shifting fortress inhabited by hostile creatures made of ammunition called the Gundead. Their shared goal is to reach the deepest level of this labyrinth and claim its legendary treasure: a mythical gun said to have the power to kill the past. Each Gungeoneer carries their own reasons for seeking this weapon, hoping that by undoing their greatest mistake, they might find absolution.

The game features permadeath, meaning all items and weapons are lost upon dying, and players must start again from the first floor. Between runs, a hub area called the Breach allows players to unlock new items and interact with non-player characters.
