Story & context
Long before recorded history, the first Guardians walked beside mankind. They were seers, shamans, sages, and mystics — rare souls who could sense the hidden forces moving beyond the world. With their gifts, they protected early civilizations from the unknown, guided humanity through darkness, and helped usher in ages of growth, knowledge, and prosperity. But some Guardians were not content to guard the world. They wanted to command what lay beyond it. Seeking power, they performed a forbidden ritual and reached beyond the veil. What answered was ancient, hungry, and vast. The ritual did not grant them mastery over the darkness. It consumed them. But some Guardians were not content to guard the world. They wanted to command what lay beyond it. Seeking power, they performed a forbidden ritual and reached beyond the veil. What answered was ancient, hungry, and vast. The ritual did not grant them mastery over the darkness. It consumed them. Those who took part were twisted into the first Dark Avatars: primordial monsters born from corrupted power and immortal hunger. Among them were Thirst, the first of the vampires; Rage, the first of the werewolves; and Torment, the first of the evil spirits. Others are spoken of only in fragments, their names lost or buried, but their corruption still lingers in the shadows. The Dark Avatars could not remake the world alone, so they created progeny. Lesser vampires, werewolves, spirits, and other horrors spread through the hidden places of human history, preying on the living, corrupting the vulnerable, and building secret cults devoted to the darkness. Now, in the modern city, those cults are rising again. Civilians vanish from the streets. Rituals tear at the veil. Monsters gather as the night deepens. Their goal is simple: summon a Dark Avatar back into the world and bring about The Endless Night — an age where the sun will never rise, and the monsters will feast on the souls of the living forever. Only the remaining Guardians stand in their way.
