Following the expiration of the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, coupled with the significant depletion of the world's oil resources, the major military powers have engaged in all-out war for control of the White Continent's oil, leading to the near-total collapse of governments. Private companies—all militarized—now dominate what remains of the world and battle each other over polluted territories unsuitable for human life, often using machines and robots.
